This is an old one, but I just saw it for the first time and it is definitely worth a review!
Rudy (1993) is an inspirational story for anyone who dreams to do anything. Rudy Ruettiger (Sean Astin) is a small guy who has dreamed of playing for Notre Dame football since he was 5. The movie, which is based on a true story, starts out following Rudy as he grows up, plays high school football, graduates high school and begins working at his fathers iron business. He was never a smart kid, but everything he did, he put his best effort into. This effort will later be used for and against him as he continued to search for his dream.
Rudy was a great movie to watch. It definitely isn't a movie that you watch to be entertained or laugh hysterically the whole time. I don't wanna say the story is slow, but its not a fast, action packed movie. If you are not in the mood for a great, inspirational story, I would say... Put this one back in your stash til you are ready to watch one! You will enjoy it more then.
I really enjoyed the movie because it shows you that if you put your heart to something... and when I say put your heart to something, I mean, everything; all of your effort, you can do anything. You may not be the best at what you do compared to other people, but be the best you can be (reminds me of the Army.. Be all you can be).
If you are at all a football fan and have not seen this movie, it is a MUST. If you are not a football fan, see this movie! I promise you this is not a football movie, its just a small part of the overall plot. Needless to say... Watch this movie sometime soon!
Overall, I give this movie a 4 out of 5 stars. If you have heard anything about the movie, you probably know how it is going to end, so in that case it is somewhat predictable, but there is a lot that you don't know about the overall movie!

Sherlock Holmes
I am writing this review a few weeks after seeing Sherlock Holmes, so I will do my best to remember it all.
Sherlock Holmes is based off of the popular self-titled books and follows Sherlock Holmes (Robert Downey Jr.) and his partner Dr. Watson (Jude Law) as they try to solve a mystery of how Lord Blackwood (Mark Strong) returned from the grave. As he begins to solve the mystery, he is met with a lot of resistance that stems to the greatest depths of the city.
Sherlock Holmes was an enjoyable movie to watch. There was a lot of "thinking" involved in the movie as you try to solve the mystery before Sherlock does. The film was made very well and kept you watching with multiple plot twists and surprising information.
I did think that the movie was quite long for the story they were telling. I found myself looking at my watch a couple times during the movie to see how long it has been since it started. It seemed like it could have been shortened somewhat and I would have not been disappointed if some of the character development scenes were left out because I don't feel like it added anything special to the movie.
Personally, I think it would have been very difficult for someone to be able to solve the mystery with the amount of information that was initially given to the viewers, but after the flashbacks (while Holmes was solving the case) it made it more evident that what was seen previously, was able to be taken and put together to solve the case. To me, I think the movie would be more enjoyable to watch a second time because you can see reactions of people to certain questions and placement of key items in the movie, now that you know what happens in the end.
I give Sherlock Holmes a 3 stars out of 5. Watch it sometime if you have a chance.

Shooter
Shooter (2007) is a great movie! I watched this the same day that I watched When In Rome. I was able to get some man credit back after seeing the chick-flick!
Shooter follows the life of Bob Lee Swagger (Mark Wahlberg) as he was a sharpshooter in the US military and then to his life in the mountains with his dog. Swagger is approached by a man claiming to be with the government who needs him to plan an assassination on the President because if he knows this information, he can help stop the one that has been plotted. He appeals to Swagger by calling out his patriotism. The rest of the movie follows Swagger as he tries to figure out when and where this plot will take place and how he can stop it from happening.
Without giving away the whole movie, lets just say, things go wrong and Swagger has to go on the run. The movie is filled with a lot of action scenes complete with explosions, gunfire, car chases, and much more. It is definitely a movie that guys would like, but take heart ladies, there is something for everyone. There is a sappy part in the movie that might even bring a tear to your eye!
The movie starts out with a slow scene as you fly over a wilderness area and quickly jumps into the action that doesn't let up until the end. The movie will keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what comes next and it ends with a BANG! It reminds me of the Bourne movies and contains some great action scenes that are comparable.
I give Shooter a 4 out of 5 stars and highly recommend it to anyone who has not seen it!

When In Rome
When In Rome has a plethora of noticeable stars that appear in small to large roles throughout the movie. I was skeptical about the movie before I went, but the broad range of noticeable faces and characters helped keep the movie away from a 100% fairy-tale chick-flick.
The movie begins by following the life of a single, yet good-looking girl, Beth (Kristen Bell) as she devotes everything to her work as a museum curator. Her sister tells her that she is getting married in a few days after meeting a guy 2 weeks ago on an airplane and that the Beth is the Maid-of-Honor in the wedding which is being held in Rome. After the wedding and meeting the Best Man, Nick (Josh Duhamel) with whom she falls for, she takes 5 coins from the "fountain of love" outside of the chapel. This action causes the people who owned the coins to fall head over heels in love with her and did everything they could to be with her because of the spell. Most of the movie consists of her running away from all these men, except for one... the one she loves. She finally figures out how to break the spell, but doesn't know if she should do it.
There is a lot of funny dialogue between the characters, which kept it somewhat entertaining, but the movie was very predictable. I think the director could have done a lot better job of selling part of the main plot and keeping it hidden from the audience til the climax of the story.
The target audience of the movie will be pleased... I asked all the females that I was with; they liked it. Its a romantic comedy, although I prefer to call it a chick-flick. Guys, if you get dragged along by your significant other, you will survive. Just demand another movie soon to regain your man card! :)
The appearances from a lot of famous co-stars including Jon Heder (Napoleon Dynamite) helped give this movie a slightly better review, but the movie still lacked a lot of things that would make it a good romantic comedy and for that, I give it a 2 stars out of 5. Definitely one to wait til it comes out on DVD, unless you have nothing to do and can make a Matinee.

The Book of Eli
I have decided that I want to use this blog to post personal movie reviews about movies that I watch (either new in theaters or others that I watch during the week). So, here goes the first one... I am by no means a film critic, this is just the way I see them. Take it or leave it.
Tonight, I went and saw "The Book of Eli" in theaters. The movie was fairly good overall. I am a huge Denzel Washington fan and was very anxious to see this movie after seeing the previews. The movie started out VERY slow. When I say that it was slow, I mean that I almost fell asleep during a few scenes that contained a heavy amount of dialogue. After about 30 minutes, I wasn't sure what was going on in the movie except that Eli (Denzel Washington) was a stud! The movie had its share of action scenes with Eli kicking some major butt, however the time between the action scenes were fairly slow. The writers needed that time to set up some major plot points that do not come into complete existence until the last few scenes of the movie.
It was very refreshing to watch a major movie out of Hollywood that did not do everything in its power to bash Christianity, religion or the Bible. In fact, this movie did the opposite! Everyone who saw that movie was exposed to the Word of God. And the way it happened was very cool and in a way that I would not have imagined. I will say that this movie was one that you had to stick with until the end in order to figure out why you watched the previous hour and a half.
The Book of Eli had its fair share of language in the script. And when I say fair share... I mean enough for this movie and another PG-13 movie. I didn't know that it was possible to use the F-bomb so many times (outside of Boondock Saints and The Departed). There was also a lot of strong violence that would make some of the strong at heart, cringe. Even though there was no adult content that Hollywood loves to throw into every movie, whether it is needed or not, I would say to leave the kids at home for this one. Oh yeah, and its R rated anyway, so you shouldn't have any reason to disagree on that.
Overall, I give The Book of Eli a 3 stars out of 5. Make sure you are not tired when you see it because the large amount of dialogue will wreck havoc on your resolve to remain awake.
