Valentine's Day

Before you get all giddy to read about my Valentine's Day (or lack thereof), know from this start.... this is about the movie that was just released in theaters entitled Valentine's Day! :)

The movie Valentine's Day is a star-studded, romantic(? - I'll explain later) comedy focusing on several different people and their lives during Valentine's Day. Some of their days start out in a good, happy way, while others start out with a gloomy day. As the days go by, happiness can change to sadness, sadness to happiness and back again.

You will notice that the brief synopsis above is very brief. This is because it is difficult to summarize this movie. There is so much going on in about 5 different, but somehow intertwined storylines, that it is impossible to give a quick summary of just one of them. This movie is FULL of big name celebrities that include Jessica Alba, Jamie Foxx, Asthon Kutcher, Anne Hathaway, Queen Latifah, George Lopez... and on and on and on. My main interest in this movie was because of how many big celebs were in it and to see how they all share a lead role or supporting role. Overall, I would say they all did a good job as far as sharing the roles and playing their part. BUT there was WAY too many main/supporting characters and plots and story lines to follow. They never really grabbed me into the movie and I was continually confused with who was dating who, who was sleeping with who, who was cheating on who and who was related to who! (wait... was this Sex in the City?)

Now, back to the movie. The comedy was great. There were so many lines that kept you laughing, some obvious, some more subtle. As you probably noticed in the synopsis, I placed a question mark (?) after the romantic description. This is because I question the romantic portion of the description. Granted, there were parts that were all mushy, gushy romantic, but there was plenty that I would not consider romantic.

Another thing I had a problem with was how they threw around sex like there was nothing to it. The movie begins by showing 3 couples who are waking up with each other and 2 mention how they loved last night. There are all kinds of sexual comments littered throughout the movie and one teenage couple sets up their first time and talk about it like a first date. I have a problem with this because what is this teaching those teenagers and younger who watch this movie because of the star draw?

The movie did a good thing in one of the story lines with a moral of the story being that you should fall in love and marry your best friend because that is when you will be truly happy. Now, it then turned around and showed a big football player "coming out of the closet" followed by a surprising, but disturbing homosexual scene. It was obvious to me that this movie was full of political propaganda, including a brief, but obvious reference to NO H8 campaign (homosexual campaign in California) as well as the homosexual ending to one of the story lines.

I give this movie a 2 out of 5 stars. Mostly because of the comedy and a good role played by Ashton Kutcher. The story was very undeveloped and sketchy. Don't waste your time and money going to the theater. If you absolutely want to see this movie because of the stars or comedy, Red Box it when it comes out on DVD in a few months, but don't forget to return it the next night! Not worth another dollar!
